Clothing is a tool for measuring time. Clothing is a site for transformation. Material evolves from seed to fiber to textile to garment. Through wear and use a garment adapts to our body, molding to the contours of human geometry. Dirt, stains, and markings leave a trace of our past. We, as individuals, form identities when we adorn ourselves with clothing. When we put on clothing we become some one, or some thing.
Comfort, protection, ceremony, activity, city, street, and country. I present garments that are fit for any time, any place, and any occasion; there is no distinction between formal and informal.
Garments are composed of 100% organic cotton fabrics sourced from a 5th generation small-batch textile company in the United States.
Tailoring is exhibited to introduce an idea about discipline and posture. Structured canvas garments show a form of rigidity. First, you mold to the clothes, then, over time, the clothes mold to you. Through wear, use, love, control, and restraint, a relationship is formed with the garment.
Jersey and french terry garments are soft to the touch, flexible, and provide a contrast to the stiff, heavy weight of canvas. Simple hemp ropes are used as closures, drawstrings, cinches, and ornamental jewelry. A variation of the Nike Air Force One completes the uniform look with custom finishes.
Geological deep time. The collection is presented among 650 million year old granite at Stony Creek Quarry in Branford, Connecticut. Since its founding in 1858, the quarry has served some of the most historic buildings and structures in the Northeast, notably the base of the Statue of Liberty, Grand Central Station, the Brooklyn Bridge, Columbia University, and 550 Madison Avenue. The granite, which has aged over eons, eras, and epochs, through an oxidation process has transformed in hue, tone, and color.
Alchemical processes illustrate time. Drill bits and wedges used on-site at Stony Creek Quarry to cut the very stone that the collection is presented with are catalysts for a metal oxidation treatment that embeds the rich history of the stone into the clothing. A natural overdye treatment composed of the roots of Anchusa officinalis (Blugloss/Alkanet) finish the garment in uneven hues of grey, purple, and pink, mirroring the granite textures found in Stony Creek Quarry. The clothes resemble the ancient stones and the tools that carve them. The clothes carry the weight of time, the rigidity of tailored edges, the stains of weathering, and the alchemical transformation from organic matter to adornment of the built environment.
